WEEKLY REMINDERS

·      Picture Day will be Thursday, Oct. 28th. If your child's picture envelope is not received before the 28th their picture will not be taken. Students may wear dress-up clothes no jeans. If your child is going to take pictures, please bring in the picture money envelope.


-Halloween Party will be this Friday, October 29. The suggested donation of $5 will help with the party cost and can be submitted until Friday. We will be having pizza, juice, water, snacks (healthy and holiday themed) and dessert!


-See Saw account has been set up please see the attached link to activate your child's account. Click Here, for scanning code or please refer to your email for additional directions.


-  All children are required to have the FLU shot before December 31st, 2021.

Unit Topic:

My Five Senses

 

Essential Question for the Unit:

How do we use our senses to explore, investigate and understand the world around us?

 

Focus Question for the Week Related to the Text:

How do we use our sense of taste?

 

Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Apple Tasting

 The teachers will invite children to taste different types of apples and discuss how do they taste? how do they smell? and which one is their favorite and why? The teachers will then help them record their favorite apple in a chart.

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

 PK. ELAL.13Uses a combination of drawing, dictating, oral expression, and or emergent writing to state an opinion about a familiar topic in child-centered, authentic, play-based learning. 

 

Foundational Text for the Week:

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

 

 Level 1: Recall 

What did Omu make for dinner? 

Who did Omu share her stew with? 

Level 2: Skill/Concept 

How did everyone know Omu was making something delicious?

What part of your body do you use to smell? 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

Why do you think Omu shared her stew with everyone? 

How do you think Omu felt when she was ready to eat dinner and discovered the stew was all gone? 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

Why do you think everyone who had some of Omu’s stew came back to her apartment with food to share with her for dinner? Why did Omu think the dinner she had at the end of the book was the best dinner ever? 

 

Lessons and Activities for the Week:

 

Blocks- Children are encouraged to use tree-shaped blocks.  Students will be able to explore how the blocks feel and look compared to the other blocks in the block area.

 

Pretend Play- The Dramatic Play center will be transformed into an apple orchard. Students will be able to explore apples with their senses.    

 

Art- Play-doh will be added to the art center as children discuss how the play-doh feels, looks, and smells.

 

Science- A "Feely Box" will be added to the science center.  Students are invited to put their hands in the holes of the box and identify the object using only their sense of touch. 

 

Math- Students will be able to sort animal manipulatives by color, size, type, and texture.

 

Library- Students are invited to look at our classroom books and discuss what they see with their peers.

 

Writing- Scented markers will be provided in the writing center. Students will be encouraged to use their sense of smell as they use the markers.

 

Sensory- Sand and water, or play-doh.

Matching Sounds

The teachers will provide small, closed containers with various materials inside that make noise when children shake them. The children will be invited to shake the containers and listen to find the matching sounds.

PK.PDH.1. Uses senses to assist and guide learning

 

Foundational Text for the Week:

Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp! by Wynton Marsalis link to the week’s foundational text click HERE!!

 

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

 

Level 1: Recall 

What are some of the things in this book that make noise? What are some of the sounds you heard in this book? 

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept 

We often use our voices for talking. This is one way we can make sound. What are some other ways we can use our bodies to make sound? What part of your body do you use to hear?

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

In this book, there are instruments that make noise, vehicles that make noise, and things at the boy’s home that make noise. What are some things in our classroom that make noise? The boy in this book has an alarm clock. His alarm clock ticks and makes a “tlick-tlock” sound. Do you use know anyone who uses an alarm clock? Who? How can alarm clocks be helpful?

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

Sounds can make us feel different ways. Some sounds might make us feel happy. A sound that makes me feel happy is ___________. What are some things that make you feel happy? Sad? Excited? This book is called Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp: A Sonic Adventure. What is an adventure? Why do you think the author of this book called it an “adventure?”

 The teachers will work with students to transform the dramatic play center into an apple orchard. Students will be asked to brainstorm and think of what objects should be added to the center to create the orchard.

PK.AL.4: Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness to learn new things and have new experiences.

What are some things the book says you might see if you take a neighborhood walk in the almost- night?

 What are some things you see when you take a walk near your home/pre-K? 

What sense are you using when you use your eyes to look around for things on a walk? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

What might people see in our classroom if they noticed our windows here? If our classroom windows were dark and you couldn’t see inside, what story might you tell about it?

How does our sense of sight help us learn about our world?
